I just got done with my evening run (more on that saga later) around midnight tonight and I had just finished logging it on my Mac when I checked CNN and they had a breaking news story that Steve Irwin had been killed by a stingray near Port Douglas, Queensland, Australia.
I was a fan of Steve Irwin and I was always amazed at how well he handled animals. Having handled venomous snakes in my career, I always felt amazement and incredible respect for his skill in reading and anticipating the actions of dangerous animals as well as his physical agility and quickness. He also was a great educator and a wonderful advocate for endangered species protection and the conservation of reptiles. Steve will be greatly missed by the millions of people that learned so much from your television programs and from your wildlife park. My heart goes out to his wife and children.

When I got this news, the first thing I did was send an text message to Aaron. He is trapping kangaroo rats with his girlfriend (it’s for her PhD) in the California-Nevada-Oregon border area and probably has no access to news. In fact, his cell phone may not even work up there but I am sure he would want to know about the accident.
