The Other Broncos Win the Fiesta Bowl

January 2nd, 2007 · No Comments

Hot WIfe and I just finished watching one of the most amazing sporting events we have ever seen. We were both rooting for Boise State to beat Oklahoma and it seemed like they had the game locked up when they were ahead 28-10 in the third quarter. Then Boise State made some mistakes, Oklahoma scored 18 points and tied the game up with a two point conversion (which took three attempts due to penalties) with a 1:26 left in the game.

Boise State had lost momentum and Oklahoma looked like they would take charge and win the game. Oklahoma kicked off to Boise State. Then, on the ensuing play, Boise State quarterback Jared Zabransky threw an interception which Oklahoma cornerback Marcus Walker returned 34 yards for a touchdown. Now down 35-28 with 62 seconds left, Zabransky put on a masterful drive. First play, was a 36 yard pass. Then he was sacked with a 8 yard loss back to mid-field. Then there were two incomplete passes. There was 7 seconds left and it was 4th down and 18. Zabransky throws a nice pass to of his Drisan James at the 36 yard line. James was in traffic and he flipped the ball back to Jarard Rabb who raced down the sideline and dove into the endzone. A hook and ladder play! The extra point was good and Boise State had tied the game. There were 22 points scored in the final 86 seconds of regulation.

In overtime, Oklahoma scored on their first play. Boise State had some trouble moving the ball. Finally, it was down to 4th and 2 at the 5 yard line. In a shotgun formation, Zabransky the quarterback went into motion left and the snap went directly to wide receiver Vinny Perretta. Perretta rolled right and threw a pass to Derek Schouman for the touchdown. Now they were down by a extra point.

Boise State’s coach, Chris Peterson called a timeout, talked things over with his team, and then sent out the offense for the two-point conversion to win the game. They lined up in a shotgun formation with three wide receivers on the right. Zabransky took the long snap, faked a pass to the right, then running back Ian Johnson took the ball from behind Zabransky’s back and ran in for the two point conversion and the win. It was the old “Statue of Liberty” trick play. Boise State wins 43-42! (Link).

Coach Chris Peterson called a great game and his players executed it. He made some very gutsy play calls and beat a very good Oklahoma team. I think it is a shame that college football doesn’t have a playoff system. I think teams like Boise State deserve a chance to win a national championship. This is one of the reasons I don’t watch much college football —I hate the use of polls and rankings instead of having the players settle who is best on the field. Frank Deford has a good commentary on the stupidity of the BCS.
