Today, President Bush commuted Scooter Libby’s prison sentence saying that ” I have concluded that the prison sentence given to Mr. Libby is excessive. Therefore, I am commuting the portion of Mr. Libby’s sentence that required him to spend thirty months in prison.” However, the punishment meted out by the judge fell within federal sentencing guidelines. In the past, the president and the Justice Department has been very adamant about sentencing guidelines.
While I am not surprised at the current arrogance of President Bush, I am surprised at how angry I am about this commutation. My God, I think he’s ruined this Independence Day for me.

Dave,
I hate to burst your bubble, but I’m mostly upset because President Bush didn’t pardon Scooter Libby. He was a fall guy for folks trying to go after Carl Rove. He wasn’t the President’s brother; wasn’t a spouse of a campaign contributor and close friend of the President. Constitutionally, the President has the power to pardon or commute sentences. At least his popularity can’t fall into the negative numbers.
Cheers…and good luck on the running. I really hope it goes well for you.
