Our heat wave continues (from the National Weather Service via the Weather Underground):
… Record highs broken or tied across the Las Vegas forecast area again today [July 6, 2007]… …
The high temperature at McCarran International Airport here in Las Vegas this afternoon climbed to 115 degrees. This reading tied the record high for the date last set in 1989.
Desert Rock Nevada broke their daily record high of 104 degrees set in 1999 with a high of 111 degrees.
In California… the Daggett Airport recorded a high of 115 degrees breaking the previous record of 114 degrees set in 1989.
That being said, yesterday we did get some of these white puffy things that they call clouds. Some mid-level monsoonal moisture crept into the area from the southeast and there was enough moisture instability to create some cumulus clouds and some virga (that poor rain never had a chance, falling into the hot dry air near the surface).
Needless to say, my running has been on hiatus this week due to the heat. With the lowest temperatures in the low 80s, it is hard to get the motivation to run. I occasionally run on the treadmill at the gym, but I find that very boring and tedious. Furthermore, the air pollution index has also been ranging from Unhealthy to Moderate.
I was planning on running very early this morning, but last night I was outside on the patio opening a box of 1500 crickets shipped to me from Rainbow Mealworms to feed my lizards and the dull box knife slipped and I stabbed myself in the right shin. It was a deep and nasty cut that was dribbling blood down my leg. I hastily transferred the crickets to their aquarium, came inside through the downstairs bathroom, and wadded up a clump of toilet paper on the wound. I made it into the living room and decided not to risk leaving a trail of blood through the house, so I sat down on the living room floor and called for Hot Wife who was upstairs. I told her to bring bandages downstairs. She first asked “Are you kidding me?” She came down, cleaned me up and we put a big Band-Aid on the cut. That did the trick as far as stopping the bleeding. However, the shame of being an idiot will last forever.
My little accident is a good example of why knives with dull blades are dangerous. A sharp blade would have requires much less force to use to cut and probably wouldn’t have slipped. I will definitely be more careful in the future.
