Making More Marrow

January 13th, 2008 · No Comments

Despite waking up throwing up on Saturday morning, I was feeling good enough by Saturday night to fly out to Orange County for the first step in the marrow donation process. Early Sunday morning I went to the cancer center and the two nurses there opened the door for me. They did a quick physical exam, drew some blood, and injected me a rather large (three times the normal dose) of filgrastim (Apogen) to stimulate my bone marrow production. The oncology doctor came by to make sure I survived the injections and they watched me for about an hour to make sure I didn’t have an allergic reaction.

The limo took me back to the airport, I caught an earlier flight back home and I was home by early afternoon. The only ill-effect of my travels is that I missed the Charger’s upsetting the Colts in the Divisional Playoffs. By bedtime, I was feeling slightly sore but nothing worth mentioning.
