Early reports state that the Navy successfully launched a missile that struck the failed US spy satellite over the Pacific Ocean. More details were not available but debris should begin reentering the atmosphere along the next few orbits. Ostensibly, the shootdown was supposed to rupture a hydrazine fuel take but many believe that the shootdown was to demonstrate our anti-satellite capability to the Chinese.
By the way, the current leaders in the Wired “name the spy satellite shootdown” contest is:
Operation Sputnixed
followed by:
Operation Enduring Shrapnel
and Operation No Satellite Left Behind
My favorite, Operation OMFG It’s Coming Right For Us placed in the middle of the contest.
