Hydrazine Freezing Again, No Plans For the Navy To Get Involved in Ulysses Spacecraft

February 25th, 2008 · No Comments

Ulysess
The Ulysses solar observing spacecraft is failing and once the hydrazine fuel freezes in the lines (at 2°C) the spacecraft will be impossible to maneuver. Of course, this spacecraft is in a solar orbit that carries it over the poles of the sun, so there is no need to show up the Chinese.
The Ulysses spacecraft has lasted for 17 years (four times its projected lifespan) and has provided researchers with valuable data about the polar regions of the sun. Also, as the only spacecraft with a gamma ray detector out of the ecliptic, it is very important in detecting and locating gamma ray bursts. The spacecraft is failing because its radioisotopic generator is aging and doesn’t produce enough electricity to power the spacecraft’s heaters, scientific equipment, and communications gear.
