Do snow flurries count when you are sleeping? I like to say that just about every winter I see snow flurries here in the Las Vegas Valley. This year has been an exception. Not only am I working inside a lot more, this winter was a bit more mild than other winters. Most of the storms seemed to occur overnight so any snow flurries would only visible to a few people. Anyway, it seemed like winter was over and Spring was on the way when high temperatures made it into the upper 70s and the air conditioner kicked on in the house.

However, last night a winter storm rolled though southern Nevada. I heard some thunder in the distance about 4:00 AM and heard a bit of rain and wind against the windows. Was there snow mixed with the rain at this elevation? I will never know but we did wake up to wet streets and 0.04 inches of rain on the automatic gauge. It’s 40 degrees and very windy so the outside procession for Palm Sunday Mass will be fun. I can easily deal with the weather but many Las Vegans will suffer and complain. I can’t wait.

From the National Weather Service:

7:44 AM
Light snowfall and fog is occurring at the Mountain Pass along Interstate 15 between Baker and Primm. Higher elevations including Mountain Springs along Highway 160…Summerlin…and other areas in the valley greater than 3500 feet in elevation are expected to experience snow showers and reduced visibility due to the storm. Be aware and drive slowly as roads may be slick from rain and snow.

Storm Report
9 inches of snow at Mt Charleston [Kyle Canyon].
20 inches of snow measured at Lee Canyon.
