On Wednesday, Spencer had surgery on the chondrosarcoma tumor in his scapula. Hot Wife took him to the vet first thing in the morning and he went into surgery in the early afternoon. When the vet called Hot Wife the news wasn’t great. The tumor had damaged too much of the scapula (over 80%) so the vet had to amputate Spencer’s leg. Also, Spencer had lost another pound in the 10 days since his diagnosis and was down to five pounds from his normal weight of eight. Since the surgery, Spencer has been fed with a stomach tube to get his weight back up. We’re supposed to pick him up today and continue feeding him with the tube for some time.
Now for a 10-year old cat, losing a front leg shouldn’t too much of a problem. Four-legged animals (unless they are really heavy like horses or elephants) can easily get around on three. I’ve seen plenty of three-legged dogs but never any cats (except in the blogosphere). Cats, with their great sense of balance, should be able to get around fine on three legs.
In any case, Hot Wife knows I am pleased to obtain another curiosity for our home.
