St. Thomas Ghost Town Baby? (Or a site for a quickie divorce?)

April 17th, 2008 · No Comments

Back in December 2003, Hot Pregnant Wife was very pregnant. So pregnant, in fact, I was already on paternity leave. The Princess was a few days late and Hot Wife was ready to be done with being pregnant. We did the usual things to induce labor. She walked the neighborhood putting door hangers on doors in support of a nearby proposed state mental facility (we figured with 3 hots, a cot, and some treatment we’d have fewer interesting people in the neighborhood). We went for long drives and since Lake Mead was low we went to Saint Thomas. Saint Thomas was a town on the Virgin River that was inundated by Lake Mead. It’s a ghost town that is under water most of the time.

I figured it would be cool if we had the baby in Saint Thomas. The Princess would be the first new resident in about 65 years and that would be so cool to put on the birth certificate and census forms! So I tried to get Hot Pregnant Wife to hike to the town site from the car.

That didn’t work. I went to Saint Thomas alone and wandered through the empty streets and looked at the empty foundations and basements of a lost city. Hot Pregnant Wife seethed in the car. And doctors had to induce labor a few days later. It turns out that anger at Idiot Husband doesn’t induce labor.

And as far as I know, it’s now been about 70 years since a child was born in St. Thomas. In any case, here is a good article about the lost city of St. Thomas.
