The water year runs from July to June and so far, 2007-2008 is looking very dry. We haven’t seen rain since March 16 (0.07 inches) and April is a dry month. Some of the models show rain next week but the Weather Service forecasters and myself will believe it when we see it.
From the NWS:
Long term…well we’ve been dry…and it looks like it will stay that way through the extended. The last 5 months have all featured below normal precipitation here in Vegas and considering April is climatologically our second driest month of the year…i’m reluctant to jump in and follow or blend towards any model solution that even wants to try and show any precipitation…more on that in a bit. That said…the water season precipitation for Las Vegas /July-June/ for the 2007-2008 stands at 3.13 inches…or 69.7 percent of the normal seasonal total of 4.49 inches. One bright spot in the precipitation department is across the far northwest part of the County warning forecast area…where the 2007-2008 water season total at Bishop stands at 7.25 inches…144 percent of the normal seasonal total of 5.02 inches. Keep in mind though that much of this was due to one heavy precipitation event on January 4th-5th. Long term…well we’ve been dry…and it looks like it will stay that way through the extended.
