I don’t even know what to make of the recent earthquakes near Reno. The typical pattern is to have a large earthquake followed by a series of smaller aftershocks or a “swarm” of earthquakes where all the earthquakes are about the right size (like the recent swarm off of the coast of Oregon). This pattern of increasing strengths could mean a stronger quake is possible.
The Seismology Lab at nearby UNR has a good set of maps and data on the quakes but no theories or explanations for the recent seismicity. It’s interesting the Reno quakes began soon after the Wells quake.

As I was writing this, the USGS is reporting a 3.1 earthquake near Tonopah. Very interesting.
