From the National Weather Service:
Las Vegas finally drops below 40 degrees…
Just before 6 am PST this morning the temperature at McCarran International Airport… the official climate station for Las Vegas… dropped below 40 degrees. At 642 PST the temperature reached 38 degrees… the low temperature for today. This is not only the first time this season the thermometer has dropped below 40 degrees in Las Vegas… but is also the latest first occurrence of this ever since official weather records started in 1937. The previous record for the latest first occurrence of a below 40 degree reading was November 29th 2006.
In addition Las Vegas also ended its greatest streak ever with consecutive days of a low temperature of 40 degrees or better. A stretch of 297 days started on February 17th of this year and ended yesterday… December 9th setting this record. The previous longest stretch with a low temperature of 40 or greater was 290 days set from February 10th 2005 through November 26th 2005.
With a significant pattern change expected to take place this weekend the coldest air of the season is expected to arrive in the Las Vegas Valley by early next week. The potential will not only exist for freezing temperatures in the Las Vegas Valley but also the chance for snow flakes to be seen. Certainly this will be a sharp contrast to the recent stretch of mild weather the Las Vegas area has been experiencing.
