Wen didn’t see any snowflakes in Syzdekistan today, but we did have some sleet rattling on the window from about 8:45 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. as well as quite a bit of rain and wind and a little thunder. With some snow observed at the Weather Service office today, this made for an interesting weather day:

Unusual weather in Las Vegas on Christmas day…

No… you were not dreaming of a white Christmas… at least Las Vegas
style… as just before 10 PM PST tonight a band of precipitation
passed across McCarran International Airport producing a brief
period of snow and a snow/rain mix. Any snow that fell melted on
contact… making this a trace of snow… but this ties the daily
record for Christmas day for snow in Las Vegas. Only 2 other
Christmas have had snow fall on them in Las Vegas… Christmas day
1941 and Christmas day 1988.

This is now the 4th calendar day this month in Las Vegas to see at
least a trace of snow fall on it… which ties December 1967 for the
most calendar days ever in the month of December for snow in Las
Vegas since official weather records started in 1937.

In addition… at 4:22 PM PST today… thunder was reported at
McCarran International Airport. This Marks only the 4th time since
1949 that thunder has been reported at McCarran International
Airport in the month of December. Prior to today the most recent was
back in December 2006. Ironically one of the other times was back on
Christmas day in 2003. The first time thunder was heard in December
was back in 1966.
